Candler Mathews, M.D., is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. He has particular interest in the arthroscopic and minimally invasive treatment of knee, shoulder, and hip conditions, including ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability, and hip preservation.
A native of Sumter, South Carolina, Dr. Mathews is passionate about caring for patients in his home state. He earned his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of South Carolina and his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where he was named Outstanding Resident Teacher. He then completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Vanderbilt University, receiving advanced training in sports-related injuries and shoulder replacements .
During his fellowship, Dr. Mathews helped care for several teams, including the Nashville Predators (NHL), Nashville SC (MLS), the Nashville Sounds (MiLB), Vanderbilt Athletics (NCAA), and Nashville Metro high schools. His clinical practice includes sports medicine, orthopedic trauma, joint replacement, and general orthopedics. He is committed to helping patients of all ages return to an active lifestyle using both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options.
Outside of work, Dr. Mathews has remained active in community service, serving as a high school team physician in Arkansas, volunteering at pre-participation physical events, and at the Shade Tree Free Clinic in Nashville. He enjoys spending time with his wife, toddler son, and golden retriever, and his hobbies include golfing, duck hunting, playing pickleball, and cheering on the Gamecocks.
