Dr. (COL, USA-retired) Michael E. Garvin is an MUSC-trained, South Carolina native. He earned a BS degree in Biology from The Citadel, a DMD degree from MUSC's James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, completed an AEGD-One Year program at Fort Riley, KS, and an AEGD-Two Year Program at Fort Hood, TX.

Dr. Garvin served a distinguished 36 year active-duty career in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. Following his retirement from the U.S. Army in 2017, Dr. Garvin served as the Assistant Faculty Director of the Community Service Learning Center-Sylva of the East Carolina School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Garvin is board-certified by the American Board of General Dentistry, holds the A-Proficiency Designator from the US Army Surgeon General and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit. He received numerous military awards including the Legion of Merit, multiple Meritorious Service Medals, the Expert Field Medical Badge, and combat service medals for service in Southwest Asia and Bosnia.
