Mauricio Bassante Gavilanes, M.D.

A seasoned general and trauma surgeon, Dr. Bassante specializes in minimally invasive surgical procedures and advanced endoscopy. He is also professionally trained in the application of state-of-the-art robotic technology for surgical practices, enhancing precision and reducing patient recovery time. He is the current chair of MUSC Health - Orangeburg's surgery department and formerly served as the hospital's trauma medical director. Dr. Bassante commenced his medical journey at the Catholic University of Ecuador. Upon the completion of his studies, he continued his training through a residency at East Tennessee State University. In his practice, Dr. Bassante combines his extensive medical knowledge with a strong sense of empathy, striving to make each patient's experience as comfortable as possible. He is multilingual and fluent in both English and Spanish. Dr. Bassante has spearheaded several quality improvement projects, including the implementation of an enhanced recovery program specifically tailored to colorectal surgery patients, and is heavily involved in the surgical aspect of glycemic management for diabetic patients.
